One of the most effective ways to support our campaign for a statutory levy on greyhound racing is to write to your MP.

Below is a template letter which you can send to your MP – remember to add in your name, address, postcode and constituency to ensure your correspondence is prioritised.

The template includes suggested wording but we would strongly encourage you to add in your personal views on greyhound racing and a statutory levy, particularly if you have a track or kennels in or near your constituency. This will further encourage MPs to read and respond to your enquiry. You can find out who your local MP is and their contact details here. Greyhound racing has been a pillar of communities for decades and is an important part of the British sporting landscape. Attracting over 800,000 attendees annually, the sport continues to be one of the top ten spectator sports in Britain, providing a significant economic contribution. It employs over 5,400 people, generates £1.5 billion in betting turnover, and adds £166 million to the UK economy, including £52 million paid in taxes.

However, funding for greyhound welfare is currently dependent on voluntary contributions from the bookmakers making it both inconsistent and unreliable. I am therefore supporting GBGB’s Keep Welfare on Track campaign for a statutory levy as this is the only way to establish a consistent, secure and significant source of income, similar to the existing levy supporting welfare in horse racing.

I am asking you to support the Keep Welfare on Track campaign to ensure that the long-term welfare of greyhounds is protected, and that greyhound racing can continue to thrive within our communities. Specifically, I ask that you:

Write to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to ask for their support on this matter and to review how a statutory levy can be established;
Meet with the Greyhound Board of Great Britain to learn more about the campaign and how you can support it;
Support the introduction of a statutory levy on bookmakers by signing our petition and promoting this on your website and social media channels.
