Keep Welfare On Track campaign out of the traps with nationwide media coverage

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s Keep Welfare On Track campaign has launched out of the traps with media coverage across the UK.

As well as featuring in the Racing Post, national media outlet GB News recently attended Nottingham Greyhound Stadium to learn more about greyhound welfare by interviewing GBGB chief executive Mark Bird, GBGB Stipendiary Steward Tiffany Blackett, and trainer Jason Gray.

The trio spoke about the importance of securing a statutory levy to secure greyhound welfare in the long-term, as well as investing further in new welfare projects such as a greyhound centre of excellence and further genetic research.

They stressed that none of this can be achieved without the public signing the Keep Welfare On Track petition – which can be signed here.

Elsewhere, Owlerton Stadium in Sheffield has been in the media spotlight after backing the campaign, with general manager Matthew Hamilton and trainer Rosie Draper echoing calls for bookmakers to pay a statutory levy to protect greyhound welfare.

BBC Look North visited the stadium to film the duo, with the Sheffield Star, Yorkshire Post and BBC Radio Sheffield also running stories on the Keep Welfare On Track campaign.

Elsewhere, Yarmouth Stadium in Great Yarmouth have also appeared in the Great Yarmouth Mercury after announcing their support for the campaign.

Tracks in Newcastle and Sunderland have also announced their backing, with coverage appearing in the Sunderland Echo and Newcastle World.

Star Sports also recently became the first bookmaker to publicly back our campaign, as reported on by the Racing Post.

Currently, bookmakers can choose to pay a voluntary levy of 0.6 per cent of their turnover back into the industry, which helps fund key welfare initiatives for the dogs.

However, not all choose to do so, and revenue via the voluntary levy has dropped in recent years. GBGB is calling for a statutory levy through its Keep Welfare On Track campaign so that all bookmakers pay their fair share and that the long-term welfare of racing greyhounds is safeguarded.

Every petition signature counts in our quest to force a debate on the issue of greyhound welfare. Make sure your voice is heard by clicking here to sign the petition.
